Project Details
How It Works
The GPS module receives satellite signals and provides NMEA sentences via serial communication to the ESP32. The ESP32 uses the TinyGPS++ library to parse latitude and longitude data. The GSM module connects to the cellular network using AT commands. When location data is ready, the ESP32 sends it via SMS or HTTP to a specified phone number or cloud server. The user receives real-time tracking information with Google Maps links.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Arduino programming, understanding of serial communication, familiarity with ESP32 GPIO pins, and experience with AT commands for GSM modules. Users should also understand power requirements for GSM modules.
What You'll Learn
Understanding how GPS modules receive and decode satellite signals
Learning to control GSM modules using AT commands for SMS and data transmission
Implementing serial communication between ESP32 and peripheral modules
Building IoT systems that operate without Wi-Fi using cellular networks
Managing power requirements for power-hungry GSM modules
Key Features
Continuously reads and transmits GPS coordinates
Sends location data via SMS to specified phone numbers
Generates clickable Google Maps links from GPS coordinates
Operates entirely on cellular networks, ideal for mobile applications

Tools Required
Safety Precautions
Electrical
- ⚠SIM800L requires 3.7–4.2V @ 2A peak — NEVER power from ESP32
- ⚠Use proper GSM power supply with adequate current capacity
- ⚠Ensure correct polarity when connecting power supplies
Handling
- ⚠Attach antennas before powering the modules
- ⚠Avoid touching GSM module while transmitting to prevent interference
Operating
- ⚠Avoid indoor GPS testing - GPS requires clear sky visibility
- ⚠Secure SIM PIN to prevent unauthorized use
- ⚠Limit SMS transmissions to avoid carrier restrictions
